You have been in Istria so many times and you have never visited Boljun?! It's true, it is off the beaten track a little bit, perched on a hilltop, with a magnificent view of the fertile valley of the Boljunčica and the Učka mountain range overlooking it. But it is this location that has enabled our settlement to continue living since the prehistoric times of a hilltop fort, Roman sentry fort watching the road between Fianona (today's Plomin) and Tarsatica (today's Trsat in Rijeka) and Medieval fort watching the borders of the Pazin County. Our Boljun - neither a town nor a village - has always paid dearly for its good position but has always survived. Between the end of the 15th and the 17th century the town saw its peak, it had its laws, judges and mayors, and had a population of up to 130 families. Just like some of the modern renowned towns, Boljun was one of the centres of Glagolithic literacy, a fact witnessed by a number of preserved documents. Today, Boljun counts only thirty inhabitants. >>>photo gallery |
