Yes, it is situated a bit out of the way, on a top of the hill, with a wide view of the fertile valley of the stream Boljunčica and the Učka massif above it. This position had been the cause of the genesis of the place. Prehistoric kastelijer (citadel), had been followed by a Roman fortress that was looking after the road leading from Fianona (Plomin), via Učka to Tarsatica (Trsat), and later in the Middle ages by the fortress guarding the borders of the County of Pazin.Our Boljun, neither a town or a village, often payed its marginal position very costly, but managed to exist anyway. It reached the development culmination between 15^th and 17^th century¸when it had its own judges, laws and a headman, and it was inhabited by around 130 families.Like some other better known Istrian towns, Boljun had been one of the centres of Glagolitic literacy testified by many preserved documents. From Labin: Turn left in Vozilići following the directions for the tunnel of Učka. The road will take you to Boljunsko polje.
